Doubling Down on the Diploma: Why AI Is Making Parents More Likely to Send Their Kids to College

Contrary to the fear that AI is making college obsolete, American parents are, on balance, more likely to send their kids to college because of AI — not less. The pull is strongest among the most educated parents — and among the most committed partisans of both parties, not one.

All figures are weighted estimates, weighted to U.S. Census population targets, and are self-reports — what respondents say about their own expectations and experience, not audited behaviour.

Series position: Report 9 of the AI@Work series (see the series index) — a household bookend. The shift toward college is a generational/engagement story — the most committed partisans of both parties, not one side — echoing the party pattern in the lead and policy reports.

Cover Memo

This report draws on the AI@Work survey (CHIP50 Wave 38.6), a survey of 23,462 U.S. adults (weighted n = 23,485) fielded June 21–July 13, 2026. All percentages are weighted to U.S. Census population targets and are population-representative; unweighted respondent counts are reported as a reliability guide only.

These are interim estimates. Wave 38.6 launched June 21, 2026 and data collection is ongoing; the figures in this report reflect responses received through July 13, 2026 and will be revised in a later release.

Universe and bases. This report describes parents. The college-decision question (parent_view) and the AI-in-the-curriculum question (parent_curric) were asked of parents responding to the college block (unweighted n ≈ 7,005–7,008); the number-of-children item (children_count) was asked of a broader parent base (n ≈ 10,928). Each figure states its own base. With ~7,000 responses on the core items, breakdowns by education and party are reliable and are reported; finer cross-tabs are not.

A gap in this extract. The instrument's follow-up items that ask parents why AI made them more or less likely to send their kids to college (parent_view_neg, parent_view_pos) are not available in the released data, so this report can document the direction and size of the shift and who it falls on, but not the reasons parents give for it. That "why" is the natural next addition when those items are surfaced.

Coding. parent_view is coded 1 = much more likely … 5 = much less likely (3 = no change) — direction confirmed against the data (the "more likely" share rises steeply with the parent's own education, coherent only under this direction). parent_curric is coded 4 = a lot … 1 = not at all. Labels are mapped from the authoritative Wave 38.6 codebook (these items are not in the machine-readable wording registry).

Introduction

One of the loudest anxieties about artificial intelligence is that it will make a college degree a bad investment — that if AI can write the essays and pass the exams, the credential is worth less and young people should think twice before enrolling. If that fear were reshaping family decisions, parents would be the first place to see it. They are not. Asked directly whether AI has changed how they think about sending their kids to college, American parents move, on balance, toward college, not away from it.

This runs with, not against, the broader evidence that parents remain committed to higher education even amid rising skepticism about its cost and value. A June 2025 Gallup–Lumina Foundation survey found that 40% of parents want their child to attend a four-year college — the single most common preference — and 60% hope for some form of college, even as confidence in higher education's return has slipped nationally1. Wave 38.6 adds the AI-specific dimension: not just whether parents value college, but whether AI in particular is changing their calculus — and, if so, for whom. The answer is that AI is nudging parents toward the diploma rather than away from it, most strongly among the most educated, and that a majority of parents also want the colleges their children attend to teach AI directly.


AI is pushing parents toward college, not away

On balance, AI makes parents more likely to send their kids to college — the reverse of the popular narrative.

Asked whether AI has made them more or less likely to send their kids to college, parents lean positive. 27% say AI makes them more likely (13% "much more," 14% "somewhat more"), while just 12% say less likely (8% somewhat, 4% much less). The largest group by far — 62% — says AI has made no difference to their plans. The balance of opinion, in other words, tilts about 15 points toward more college, not less: for every parent AI has scared away from the diploma, more than two say it has pushed them toward it.

That is a striking rebuttal to the idea that AI is quietly emptying the college pipeline. Whatever parents make of AI's effect on essays or entry-level jobs, it is not, on net, leading them to steer their own children away from higher education. If anything, the uncertainty AI introduces appears to make a credential feel more worth having, not less — a hedge in an economy whose rules are being rewritten. The shift is concentrated at the margins rather than sweeping, but its direction is unambiguous and the opposite of what the "college is dead" framing would predict.

Comparative context. This aligns with the internal logic of the rest of this survey series. The general public, asked in the same wave whether AI makes a bachelor's degree more or less valuable, leans mildly negative (a net −8). Yet the two groups with the most at stake move the other way: hiring managers say a degree is more valuable in the AI era (net +24), and parents say AI makes them more likely to send their kids (net +15). The people actually investing in or hiring on the strength of degrees are more bullish on them than the abstract public — a pattern worth keeping in view whenever "the value of college" is debated.

The more educated the parent, the stronger the pull

The instinct to double down on college in the age of AI rises steeply with the parent's own education.

The net-positive shift is not evenly spread; it is concentrated among the most educated parents. The share saying AI makes them more likely to send their kids to college climbs from 17% among parents with less than a high-school education, to 20% of high-school graduates, 19% with some college, 28% of college graduates, and 46% of parents with a graduate degree. Among graduate-degree parents, in other words, nearly half say AI has strengthened their commitment to college — and only 7% say it has weakened it, the lowest of any education group.

This is the same divide that runs through AI itself: the more educated are the heaviest AI users and, it turns out, the most convinced their kids should be credentialed for the world AI is making. It suggests the college-going gap between more- and less-educated families may widen rather than narrow in the AI era, as the parents already most oriented toward higher education become even more so. Less-educated parents are not turning against college — a majority in every group report no change — but they are markedly less likely to say AI has actively pushed them toward it.

The most committed partisans — on both sides — move most

The pull toward college is strongest among the most committed partisans of both parties; the disengaged middle barely moves — a pattern the usual three-way party split conceals.

On a simple Republican/independent/Democrat split, this looks like a one-sided Republican story: Republican parents appear the most moved toward college (35% more likely, net +24) and independents the least (17%, net +5). But the full seven-point scale shows something more interesting — it is the strength of partisanship, not its direction, that predicts who says AI has pushed them toward college. Strong Republicans are the most moved (42% more likely, net +30), but Strong Democrats are a close second (33% more likely, net +22) — while every group in between moves far less, and pure independents move least of all (14% more likely, net +2). The leaners and weak partisans of both parties (net +7 to +11) cluster together in that modest middle; the two committed poles tower over them.

This both-ends pattern survives controls. In a weighted model of the college-decision scale that adjusts for the parent's education, income, age, and gender, Strong Democrats are statistically indistinguishable from Strong Republicans — the two most pro-college groups — while every other group, and pure independents most of all, is significantly less likely to say AI has moved them toward college. The effect is therefore not an artifact of strong partisans being more educated (education adds its own, independent pull); political engagement on both sides tracks the shift on its own.

Why the strongest partisans of opposite parties would land in the same place is worth sitting with. It is not that they are simply more volatile: the strongest partisans are no more likely than anyone else to say AI made them less likely to send their kids to college (Strong Republicans 12%, Strong Democrats 11%, both in line with the sample) — their movement runs specifically toward college, not scattered in both directions. The disengaged middle, by contrast, overwhelmingly reports no change (pure independents 74% "no change," the highest of any group). The most plausible reading is engagement: the parents paying closest attention to politics — and, likely, to the AI debate running through it — are the ones translating that attention into a firmer bet on the diploma, whichever party they follow. The earlier "Republican surprise" was real but incomplete: the surprise is not that Republicans favor college, but that the most committed partisans of both sides respond to AI the same way.

Parents want AI in the classroom, too

A majority of parents want the colleges their kids attend to teach AI — though it is not yet a make-or-break priority.

Wanting to send kids to college in the AI era raises a second question: should college itself change? Parents, on balance, say yes. Asked how much it matters that their child's future college integrates AI into its curriculum, 58% say it matters at least somewhat — 23% "a lot" and 36% "somewhat" — while 42% say "not so much" (22%) or "not at all" (20%). So a clear majority of parents want AI in the classroom their tuition will pay for, but the intensity is moderate: fewer than a quarter treat it as a top priority, and a substantial minority shrug at it.

Read alongside the college-going finding, this completes a coherent parental stance: AI makes college feel more necessary, and parents would like that college to prepare their children for AI directly rather than ignore it. It is not a demand for a wholesale reinvention of higher education, but it is a clear signal to colleges that AI fluency is becoming part of what families expect a degree to deliver — a market expectation that will grow as the AI-committed, more-educated parents identified above send their children through the system.

Conclusion

The fear that AI is turning families away from college is not borne out by what parents say. On balance, AI makes American parents more likely to send their kids to college, not less — a net shift of about 15 points toward the diploma — and the effect is strongest among the most educated parents, who are doubling down hardest on a credential for the AI age. It is also strongest among the most committed partisans of both parties — Strong Republicans and Strong Democrats alike, who are equally moved once education and income are accounted for — while the disengaged middle barely shifts. And a majority of parents want the colleges their children attend to teach AI, not avoid it.

The dominant note, to be fair, is stability: most parents say AI has changed nothing about their college plans. But where it has moved them, it has moved them toward higher education, not away — and it has done so most among the families already most likely to enroll, hinting that AI may widen rather than close the college-going divide. For colleges, the message from parents is twofold and consistent: they still believe in the degree, perhaps more than ever, and they increasingly expect it to come with AI built in. What remains unmeasured here — the reasons parents give for these shifts — is the piece worth capturing next.


Appendix A — Methods

Data source. AI@Work survey — CHIP50 Wave 38.6 (Civic Health and Institutions Project / COVID States Project), the AI/employment supplement. Total unweighted n = 23,462; weighted n = 23,485. Measures and bases. parent_view ("Has AI made you more or less likely to send your kids to college?"; 5-point, much more likely → much less likely, with no change at the center) and parent_curric ("How much does it matter that your child's college integrates AI?"; a lot → not at all) were asked of parents responding to the college block (unweighted n ≈ 7,005–7,008). children_count (number of children) was asked of a broader parent base (n ≈ 10,928); it is used only to characterize the sample and is not central. Breakdowns are by education (education_cat) and by the 7-point party scale (party7), both with adequate cell sizes on the ~7,000 base; no finer cross-tabs are reported. Party is shown on the 7-point scale because the 3-point measure hides the central finding — that the two strong-partisan poles behave alike (see the partisan section).

Coding and direction checks. parent_view is coded 1 = much more likely, 2 = somewhat more, 3 = no change, 4 = somewhat less, 5 = much less likely — direction confirmed in-data: the "more likely" (1–2) share rises monotonically with the parent's education (17% among parents with less than high school to 46% among graduate-degree parents), which is coherent only if low codes mean "more likely." parent_curric (4 = a lot … 1 = not at all) is a labeled category set reported per the codebook. children_count values are read as the number of children; the codebook lists 0–10 while the parent data runs 1–10+, consistent with the item being asked of parents (no zero-child respondents), so values are treated as counts.

Estimation. Cross-tabulations are weighted shares. The education and party patterns are primarily descriptive weighted breakdowns. The both-ends partisan pattern is additionally confirmed with one weighted OLS of the 1–5 college-decision scale on party7, education, income, age, and gender (n = 6,988; R² = 0.08; Table 3b): relative to Strong Republicans, Strong Democrats are not significantly different while every other group is significantly less moved toward college — establishing that the pattern is not a composition effect of education. "More likely" and "less likely" are the sums of the two adjacent categories on each side of "no change." Cells with unweighted n < 10 are suppressed.

A framing note. parent_view measures the change in a parent's inclination that they attribute to AI, not their baseline preference for college. Comparisons to baseline-preference surveys (e.g., Gallup–Lumina's four-year-college preference) are therefore contrasts between different quantities and are flagged as such in the text.

Reproducibility. Figures map to Appendix B tables; values copied verbatim from the underlying tabulations. External benchmark fetched and verified from EdSource's report on the Gallup–Lumina survey (see the footnote at the end of Appendix B).
